Why Gutter Replacement Is Crucial for Roof Health
There’s a particular Saturday in Western Michigan, usually late March, when the ground finally softens and homeowners walk the perimeter of the house for the first time in months. It’s a good habit. It’s also when a lot of people notice, for the first time, that a length of gutter has pulled away from the fascia, or that a rust-colored streak runs down the siding beneath the corner where water has been spilling over the edge all winter.
That kind of thing is easy to move to the someday list. A sagging gutter doesn’t feel urgent the way a shingle in the driveway does. But the water that was supposed to travel through it has been going somewhere for months, and that somewhere is almost always the edge of the roof, the one place a roof is least equipped to defend itself.
When a trough clogs, separates at a seam, or loses its pitch, water backs up under the shingle edge instead of running off it. It reaches the drip edge, then the fascia board, and eventually the wooden decking the shingles are nailed into. Come January, that same backup freezes at the eave, and the meltwater trapped behind the ice works its way beneath the shingles and into the attic. Homeowners who call us about a mysterious ceiling stain in February are often looking at a gutter problem that started the previous fall.
Almost none of that is visible from the driveway, which is one reason we never charge to climb up and look. Armored Roofing and Construction has been working on Western Michigan homes for more than forty years, three generations of the same family, and an inspection with us ends with an honest answer rather than a sales pitch. Sometimes that answer is that a few hangers need resetting. Sometimes it’s that the fascia has softened to the point where no fastener will hold and the run needs to come off.
If wind or hail is what brought the gutters down, that becomes a conversation with your insurance carrier, and it’s one we have on your behalf. Our team documents the damage, works directly with the adjuster, and keeps the claim moving. And if the roof itself is nearing the end of its life, the cleanest and least expensive time to replace gutters is while the shingles are already off.
Your gutters aren’t a landscaping detail. They’re the last few inches of your roofing system, and they decide where every inch of rain ends up. Schedule a free inspection with Armored and find out what yours have been doing all winter.
