Standing Seam vs Ribbed Metal Roofs: What’s the Difference?

Standing Seam vs Ribbed Metal Roofs: What’s the Difference?

When the Hendersons started shopping for a new roof on their farmhouse just outside Byron Center, they thought metal was metal. A few quotes in, they realized the contractors kept tossing around two terms that sounded almost identical but came with very different price tags: standing seam and ribbed. If you’ve found yourself in the same spot, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions our team hears from homeowners across Western Michigan.

How the Panels Are Fastened

The simplest way to picture the difference in metal roofing is to look at how the panels are held down. A ribbed metal roof, sometimes called exposed fastener, uses screws that go straight through the surface of the panel into the wood below. You can spot those screw heads from the ground if you look closely. A standing seam roof hides its fasteners. The panels lock together along raised vertical ridges, and the clips that hold everything in place sit underneath those seams, completely out of sight. That one design choice changes almost everything about how the roof looks, performs, and ages.

Performance Through a Michigan Winter

Standing seam tends to be the premium option. The hidden fastener system holds up beautifully against Michigan winters, expanding and contracting with temperature swings without working screws loose. Snow and ice slide off the smooth panel face cleanly, which matters a great deal here in West Michigan. Homeowners who choose standing seam usually want a clean, modern look and a roof that can outlast them. Ribbed panels are more affordable upfront and faster to install, which makes them a popular pick on barns, garages, and homes where budget matters most. The trade-off is that the exposed screws and rubber gaskets eventually need attention, especially after thirty or so years of weather.

Choosing What’s Right for Your Home

As a third-generation, family-owned contractor with more than forty years of West Michigan experience, Armored has installed plenty of both styles on plenty of different homes. The right choice really does depend on your home’s design, your budget, and how long you plan to stay. A free in-person estimate from one of our project advisors makes that exterior remodeling decision a lot clearer than any online comparison ever could, and there’s no obligation to move forward afterward.
